hearing clinicThere are approximately 35 million Americans, including those who are completely deaf, who are hearing impaired and need the assistance of hearing aids or a cochlear implant in order to hear sounds or people’s voices.  Many hearing impaired people rely on reading lips or the use of ASL – American Sign Language in addition to their hearing aids.

In order to get the best hearing aid for a person’s hearing loss they should visit an otolaryngologist (an ear, nose, and throat doctor) at a hearing clinic who can rule out medical conditions such as bacterial infections or tumors that affect hearing. There should also be an audiologist onsite in order to do custom fittings for the hearing aid and to answer any questions or help with any adjustments that need to be made once a person has used their hearing aid for a few days.

A hearing aid is essentially a mold that fits into the ear with a small tube coming from the mold out to the hearing device.  Advancements in technology have allowed hearing aids to shrink in size so that now they fit over the ear or some of the new digital hearing aids fit within the ear.  Hearing aids began as large ‘black boxes’ that looked like a transistor radio and a person would strap it to their chest or carry it in their breast pocket and have two wires with ear-buds traveling up to their ears in order to capture what most people described as ‘noise’ not sound or voices.

Some people with long hair do not mind wearing over-the-ear hearing aids because their hair hides the device, however those with short hair may want to try the in-the-ear-hearing aids that are almost undetectable.  For those that do not mind showing off their hearing aids, there is a line of hearing aids that are brightly colored and painted by artists with varying designs.

When shopping for a hearing aid, it is best to find hearing aids reviews through your primary care provider/doctor or through research over the Internet. Many hearing aid manufacturers conduct research studies and reviews of their own hearing aid and then publish the results to help new consumers in the decision process for choosing a new hearing aid.
